This article explores the question of literary authority raised in class today. It is by Lynn Staley Johnson  and is called  The Trope of the Scribe and the Question of Literary Authority in the Works of Julian of Norwich and Margery Kempe. You can find it on the JSTOR database:

this book called "the Powers of the Holy: Religion, Politics, and Gender in Late Medieval English Culture" will be very useful to you if you would like to get a better sense of attitudes to writers and particularly women writers at the time when Julian was writing. I have pointed you to the chapter on Julian which discusses her work in relation to the question of auctoritas:

the following essay considers Julian as a rhetorician:

This is a useful book of essays on the literary and rhetorical value of the Revelations and the way in which Julian attempts to manipulate and rewrite the biblical tradition.

A very good essay on the literary qualities of mystical writing is called,
"Mystical and Literary Texts: Meeting the Other, and Each Other, at the Borders of Language"
Author(s): Cristina Mazzoni
