Characteristics of Dream visions and dialogue poems

The following book provides a solid introduction to the genre of the dream vision and also gives some attention to allegory as stylistic feature of this:

These visionary poems often take the form of a debate between a central figure and an allegorical figure or figures. An example of this 'dialogue' can be found in Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy and of course in the Body versus Soul poems. Here is the full version of "The Debtate of the Body and The Soul" that we looked at briefly in class:
