Augustine rhetoric and language
Donovan Jonson writes quite a compelling piece about Augustine's use of rhetoric in the confessions which you may be interested in reading. The piece is entitled "Story and Design in Book eight of Augustine's Confessions". It is accessible on the JSTOR database.
